PowerSchool Cyber Security Incident

Greetings All

PowerSchool, the parent company for our Student Information System (SIS) informed us of a cyber security incident that has affected many of their users in the United States and Canada.

We are writing to update you about the incident.

PowerSchool recently discovered unauthorized access to its systems and is working to address the situation. As a result, some of our student, faculty and staff data was compromised. PowerSchool is still working to identify the specific type of data for each District affected. It is worth noting that this breach is on PowerSchool’s end and has not affected any of our other systems in the district.

PowerSchool has assured us that they have taken all appropriate steps to contain the incident and prevent the data involved from further unauthorized access. They have implemented their cybersecurity protocols and assembled a team of experts, including members of senior leadership and external cybersecurity specialists. The company has also reported the incident to law enforcement. PowerSchool does not anticipate the data being shared or made public and is confident that it has been deleted.

This incident appears to have affected numerous school districts across Vermont, therefore, the Vermont Agency of Education is actively working with PowerSchool to investigate the situation and determine the full extent of the breach.

We are committed to keeping you informed as we learn more from the Agency of Education and PowerSchool. We will follow up with you as soon as we have more information as to the specific impact on MTSD.
